Expository Essay Writing Ideas

There is often some discussion about exactly what is the purpose of an expository essay – and the obvious key word here is “expository,” coming from another word, “expose.” So basically, you will be exposing, or explaining, an idea, concept, thing, situation, etc., so that your reader understands it.

The Great Thing about Expository Essays

Given the way we define expository essay writing, the possibilities for topics are almost limitless, and this is a good thing for you. If given a choice, you can pretty much choose any topic within the broader content of your course, so you can choose a topic that really interests you. To get your brain working on this, here are some expository essay ideas from a variety of content fields:

  • What is the history of your school mascot
  • Staying healthy while eating campus and fast food
  • The best and/or worst way to study for finals
  • The biggest scandals in your home town
  • What it is like to be an illegal alien
  • What are the basic positions of the Tea Part Movement (or Progressive, or Libertarian, etc.)
  • How we can prevent bullying
  • What is Google Glass
  • How does Wi-Fi work
  • How will a 3D bio-printer change the field of medicine
  • What is string theory
  • What is bio-engineering
  • What is cognitive behavioral therapy

Topic Selected – Now What?

Writing an expository essay is not different than writing any other essay, but here, as a refresher, are your basic steps:

  1. Make a list of all of everything that relates to your topic that might help to explain it. The put the related items together in clusters – these will be your sub-topics for your paragraphs.
  2. If you need resources, go get them. They might come from internet sources; they might come from interviewing someone, etc.
  3. Get a thesis statement by asking yourself questions about the topic. “What should my reader know about…..?” “Why should my reader now about…..? The answer to these questions will be your thesis – you just need to put in good sentence form to be included in your introduction.
  4. Make a brief outline for your body paragraphs. What is the sub-topic to be covered and what are the details that go into that sub-topic?
  5. Write your body paragraphs.
  6. Write your introduction – start with some kind of shocker, piece of humor, or short anecdote. For example, “Jose lives in a rented room with five other illegal aliens.” Now you have piqued interest, and the reader wants to go on.
  7. Write your conclusion – don’t add new information, but tie what you say back to your thesis, end with a humorous statement (if the topic is humorous), or give a call to action (email your Congressman), etc.
